With all the fuss about the bride and the mother of the bride, the mother of the groom can be overlooked. Of course, we know that for the mother of the groom the day of her son’s wedding is just as important and it’s just as important that she is looking her best. What should she wear to be looking her best on the occasion of her son’s wedding? So how does a mother of the groom choose the right outfit?
What sort of wedding will it be?
This might seem obvious, but wear something that is appropriate for both the occasion and the weather. If the wedding is formal then wear formal. If it’s a casual beach wedding then a pretty summer frock and a big sun hat may be the most suitable outfit.
Check in with the bride and groom.
The outfits of both sets of parents ideally will compliment those of the bridal party. You certainly don’t have to match, but if the bridesmaids are wearing fuchsia for example, the mother of the groom in a red dress may not look quite right in the wedding photos.
Check in with the mother of the bride.
You don’t want to outshine the mother of the bride either. Of course you should look your best, and be just as stylishly turned out, but have a chat to the mother of the bride to find out what she’s planning on wearing. You don’t want to turn up in a diamante-studded designer gown while she’s wearing a demure suit.
Wear what makes you feel good!
The first three points are useful things to keep in mind – but the most important thing about what you wear is that you should feel good about yourself, be comfortable, and know that you’re looking your best.
