Most of us are not experts when it comes to photography, so what do you need to look for in a good wedding photographer? To help you make the right choice we listed some questions for you to ask yourself, and to ask photographers you are considering hiring.
Questions to ask yourself
How much can we afford?
This might seem obvious but working out your budget first will narrow down you search for a photographer. Be wary of spending too little – someone offering a budget priced service may not produce the quality you are after.
What style of photographs would you like?
There are so many choices. Documentary style, traditional style, fine art and journalistic or story-telling style are all very popular.
Think about how your choice of style will impact your wedding day – if you want formal photographs then expect to spend a lot of time with the photographer, being posed and moved about. If you want someone who will blend in and not interrupt the flow of the day too much then the photographs will be more natural and journalistic in style.
Questions to ask the photographer
Can we see your portfolio?
Do you like the style of photographs that they produce? Is the lighting what you are after? Dark and evocative or bright and colourful? Do they take shots from different angles? Are all their various wedding shots similar or can they adapt their style?
What services do you offer?
What does their service include? Can you customise a package based on your needs?
What is their refund and cancellation policy and do they have liability insurance?
This is important. Heaven forbid something goes wrong on your wedding day, but in case of mishaps and unforeseen events you want to be clear about what their policies are and if they are insured.
