This month we introduce The Waterfront Function Centre’s in-house stylist
See Belinda’s story (in her own words) below.
My name is Belinda Rubbino the face behind B styled by Belinda.
My passion for weddings and events started when I was a teenager. Growing up in a large family we attended many weddings and functions and I was always fascinated by the different styles and amazing set ups.
I wanted to have a career that I was passionate about, so at 17 I left school and studied a diploma of Event Management at TAFE. The course duration was 3 years and back then the events industry was nowhere near as big as it is today. There were very few jobs so after graduation I got a job as a receptionist at Studio Magazines. They published the magazines Studio Bride & Studio Bambini.
As a receptionist you see a lot of things and I watched as the fashion director went through many fashion assistants. I thought being the fashion assistant would be a great opportunity for myself to get some experience styling photo shoots. Sabrina – the fashion director – and I had become close so I took the opportunity to ask her if she would consider me for the no vacant assistant position. I had no experience styling but I watched and listened to everything. I learnt quickly and loved every day of this work.
I was casting models, sourcing designer wedding dresses, designer kids fashion, developing styling concepts, sourcing props these concepts and scouting shoot locations. Put simply I was always on the phone.
As much as I was loving this job my heart was very much pulling me in the Wedding and event direction. So after 2 years of working at the magazine I began working as a casual event stylist at a local event company in the Sutherland Shire – Rose Baker Events. For the next 3 years I saw the less than glamourous side of this career. I was responsible for ironing sashes, putting on chair covers, tying sashes, cleaning vases and removing wax from candle holders (and anything else it had dripped on). Mostly I worked onsite setting up weddings at a venue in the Eastern suburbs. I worked my way into full time employment and started taking on more responsibilities such as meeting with brides, developing styling concepts and taking control of the onsite setups.
Rose Baker Events had a sister business called Chair Cover Hire and I was offered the amazing opportunity to go into partnership in this business. I took the opportunity and stated to build a client base and a name for myself in the events industry.
In 2015 our partnership ended as we looked to take on differing opportunities. This was an equally amazing and terrifying time as I took over the company on my own. I certainly learnt a lot about myself, life and business. More importantly I learnt to dream big and then follow those dreams. In that first year out on my own (2015) I took on many corporate clients and began to style some amazing venues such as The Star, Novotel Brighton, Sofitel, The Westin, Luna Park and The Sydney Convention Centre. My dreams had come true.
After marrying my hubby Joe and having my two little boys, Orlando and Oscar (pictured with me right) I realised I wanted to be more available for my family and be closer to home. I was lucky enough to land the perfect job as the in-house stylist at Waterfront Functions Centre San Souci. I have always love this venue and could not be more thrilled to be able to style the beautiful rooms they have.
I have styled 100’s of events here from Weddings, Engagement Parties, Christening Celebrations, Birthday Celebrations and exclusive club events like Melbourne Cub, New Year’s Eve & Christmas. This venue is my second home, I could style it with my eyes closed.
In 2020 I decided to re-brand from Chair Cover Hire to B Styled by Belinda Rubbino. I had wanted to change the name for some time. I am a stylist and I no longer want to be know for only providing chair covers. COVID-19 as devastating as it has been for the industry I love (and others) gave me the perfect opportunity to finish my re-branding and have a fresh start.
I started at the bottom a mere 13 years ago and now I am a proud business owner. I’m fortunate to love what I do and also to see the joy it brings to my clients when I bring their vision to life.
I look forward to working with you soon.
